Hey guys
I was wondering if any of you have any advice regarding what to charge for a cover image for books or an album?  Do you set  base price and if so what would you charge?  Or do you charge an hourly rate?  Have the opportunity to work with some publishers and want to be well informed before I start working with them.  I understand that that it depends on the task, and the country ect but some general advice would be appreciated!
Thanks
Shane

:hmm:...I always find this really hard myself....it tends to be approximately similar to musicians rates for me...for standard design work?[so @ $80-90 Aus Dollars per hr,NOT including materail costs]..or...to get a formula,I find THIS from UK Digital Arts a good guide...
“If you want to earn £30k, for example, considering you may only work about 40 weeks per year, that’s about £150 per day,” he says. “If you intend to supply your own laptop and software, you have to look at how much that will cost you over a period of time and add that expense into your rates. You may also have to factor in conferences, training, magazine subscriptions and any other expenses.” [www.digitalartsonline.co.uk/fe…
But I am a different case,as art & design are not my only source of income[I have two other jobs!!:XD:]...and I tend to work for barter,as I find this works out better in my favour....so I will design a new style of hat, say, and get a unique style made for me.....or I will do a portrait, but get cost price on jewellery framing, and a small fee to cover materials & time....I find it difficult to quote a standard rate,as my work covers art/craft/design...the most important thing[which I am sure YOU have covered?;)...is to maintain copyright, & to be clear the terms of *fair use* you are allowing...that is where most artists get stung? We ALL have nightmare tales where we signed away our rights and then kicked ourselves when it turned out to be very successful for the client?:sadangel:
Good luck in your future endeavors & I hope to see your work around the traps soon!! :highfive:
